Tara Gilligan, BA (Hons.) Psych, C.Hyp
Senior Partner and Co-Founder of the National Institute of Hypnotherapy
Tara brings a strong background in psychology, a lifelong passion for the study of human behaviour, and advanced training and certifications in Hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) from Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
Her mission is to help people of all ages unlock their innate potential and live with greater clarity, confidence, and fulfillment. With a trauma-informed perspective, and using Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (SFH) she draws on somatic approaches, parts therapy, inner child work, and a wide range of other tools in her toolbox to help clients release limiting patterns, access their inner strength, and build greater resilience and self-awareness.
Tara also has a particular passion for helping children and teens build resilience and self-belief, drawing on specialized training in pediatric hypnosis to make the process engaging, safe, and effective.
In addition to her hypnotherapy work, Tara provides executive and life coaching, blending psychological insight, hypnotherapy, and practical strategies. She combines coaching with hypnosis to help leaders, entrepreneurs, and business owners not only gain clarity and sharpen decision-making but also address underlying stress patterns and mental blocks at a deeper level. This integrated approach allows clients to lead with greater confidence, balance, and resilience. Her thoughtful, results-oriented style makes her equally at home in the hypnotherapy chair or the coaching space.
Clients describe her as calm, intuitive, and deeply attentive—someone who truly hears them and instinctively finds the right approach to help them move forward.
A lifelong adventurer, Tara has backpacked extensively through Central Asia, Southeast Asia, Europe, South America, North America and Africa. Fascinated by the diverse ways different cultures approach health and happiness, she draws on these global perspectives to enrich her practice with both science and humanity.
Tara earned her degree in Psychology more than 25 years ago and remains a dedicated learner, ensuring her work stays grounded in both evidence-based methods and compassionate connection.
Outside her practice, Tara finds balance in the outdoors, where she enjoys time in nature and the peaceful beauty of the Rideau waterway. She also values movement as part of well-being, she is often found on the water or a trail when her nose isn't buried in a book. A creative spirit, she finds inspiration in art and expression. She had the joy of raising one son, now grown, and now shares life with her husband and their furry companions.
Tara offers not just hypnotherapy, but a grounded, heart-centered partnership in change—helping clients feel at ease from the very first session and empowered every step of the way.
Hypnotherapy for Children and Teens
Tara provides in person hypnotherapy for children aged 5-12. Some 10-12 year olds do very well with online hypnotherapy. This is determined during the complimentary consultation. Parents are invited to participate in the process and walk away with new tools to help their children navigate challenges with resilience.
Adolescence can be an exciting but challenging time. Teens today face pressures from school, friends, sports, social media, and the big questions about who they are becoming. Hypnotherapy offers a gentle and empowering way to help teens manage these challenges and build lasting confidence and resilience.
Through hypnotherapy, teens can:
-
Reduce stress, anxiety, and overwhelm
-
Improve focus and confidence in academics, sports, and creative pursuits
-
Develop healthy coping skills for peer pressure and emotional ups and downs
-
Strengthen self-esteem and a positive self-image
-
Break unhelpful habits and build healthier routines
-
Tap into their natural strengths and creativity
Sessions are safe, supportive, and tailored to each teen’s needs, helping them feel more in control of their emotions and choices. Hypnotherapy can give teens the tools to navigate this stage of life with confidence, clarity, and a stronger sense of self.
